Paleocinema Podcast 13 - Atomic War versus French Girls

In this podcast I look at the 1962 nuclear war scare film "Panic In Year Zero!" starring Ray Milland and Frankie Avalon and gush lyrically about the two 1960s Jacques Demy musical masterpieces, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort.

There was certainly nothing unlucky about THIS podcast: another boffo entry! Once again mission: accomplished since I'm now dying to see the Jacques Demy musicals. I'm probably more in that mindset with my recent enjoyment of OM SHANTI OM. I love the comment you made about letting a movie just happen in front of you (particularly in the case of Bollywood films) and seeing where it takes you. I've never been a fan of Bollywood but that's exactly what I did with OM SHANTI OM and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I think it's time to seek out those young girls of Rochfort and do the same. From your description, I know I'll be delighted. The only negative is the effect it has on my pocket book (Ouch!) forcing me to buy all these great movies you're talking about. Thanks again on a wonderful and valuable podcast.

Thanks for the feedback on that one. Yeah, it gets expensive getting quality DVDs, but there are also some great cheap things coming out. I got Fritz Lang's The Big Heat yesterday for $8.

But foreign language cinema is terrific. It expands my horizons every time I make a new discovery and realise that there are continua of movie traditions that I'm totally unaware of. If you don't learn new things, you start dying, and new cinematic discoveries teach me a lot of worthwhile things. Glad you enjoy the poddie.
