James Allen Whitmore, Jr. (October 1, 1921 – February 6, 2009)
James Whitmore, a class act of an actor has died. He was the gangster Slug in Kiss Me Kate, singing "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" brilliantly with Keenan Wynn, he was the cop who finds the little girl in the desert in "Them", and he was magnificently good and poignant as Benteen in one of the very best of the original Twilight Zone episodes On Thursday We Leave For Home. Whitmore was also a US Marine in World War II and fought on Saipan. But here is one of his very last screen appearances and though it's brief, it seems to capture the man in a tough, touching way.

I found him to be a rather arresting actor. You never question his character and he pulls you into the tale from "Them!" to "The Shawshank Redemption".
