I Can't Die Yet, I Haven't Seen The Jolson Story

A few days ago there was a report that Jamie Foxx was up for playing Sinatra in a biopic of the Chairman of the Board. I took it with a grain of salt. It's like those periodic rumours that turn up about a black actor playing the half-Scottish half-Swiss character known as James Bond.

Okay, so Jamie Foxx is going to play the child of two Sicilian-Americans... okay... lemme think this through. Is this a delayed backlash against all those white Shakespearean actors who played Othello with burnt cork on their faces? Particularly Olivier's rendition in the 1960s?

Weird stuff. Maybe they can CGI Foxx into looking more Italianate, much in the manner that they de-aged Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart in the rather shitty third X-Men movie. Leaving aside the issue of race, perhaps this is one of those cases of very famous actor hubris. Very successful actors can have a tendency to think they can do anything. Very few people say "No" to them, so they develop a belief in their own entitlement.

If that's the case, here's an enormous artistic challenge for Jamie Foxx. Perhaps he could star in a remake of the movie in the youtube clip below.

Paleo-Cinema Podcast #31 - Child Safe Movies

This time around, I'll be suggesting movies to watch with children.

Not necessarily childrens' films but movies that might generate a passion for cinema in the minds of the young, so they don't grow up to say things like "Rob Schneider Is A Genius" or "I don't like black and white movies, I can't get into them" or other things that would make people doubt the integrity of their genetic structure. I offer this as a public service to the children of the world.*

*Tongue in cheek, of course

Next Week's Paleo-Cinema Podcast

Hi people.

Next week I'm following a suggestion made by my friend Danny Oz and looking at a recommended viewing list of paleo-cinematic movies for children. Not kids films per se, but quality movies that are accessible to children and which will lead them toward a life of appreciating all kinds of movies. Throw me your suggestions if you like and I'll put them into the recipe.

Okay I'm going out on a limb this time, looking at three of the most popular Paleo-Cinematic movies of all time and trying to think of something original to say about them. Orson Welles' Citizen Kane, Michael Curtiz's Casablanca and Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. Paleo-Cinema Discussion Group

Hi people. I've wanted to expand the discussion group for Paleo-Cinema from the chat window to something a little larger and able to carry multiple discussions, so I've created a Facebook Group for Paleo-Cinema discussions. The link is Paleo-Cinema Discussion Group so sign up to Facebook with even a basic type of profile and you can join in the fun.

I will be continuing the chat window, but I'd rather the larger forum for longer discussions. It also has the ability for members to upload video and still pictures, so please avail yourself of it.

Paleo-Cinema Podcast #28 Making Deals With The Devil - Faust x 3

Okay, in this pre-Easter season we look at three movies about making a deal with the Devil. First off, a baseball fan with a mid-life crisis cuts a contract with Ray Walston in Damn Yankees - only to have Gwen Verdon thrown at him. (They're thinking about remaking this with Jake Gyllenhaal in the Tab Hunter role and Jim Carrey in the Ray Walston one.)

Next we look at the comedy classic, Bedazzled (and if you don't like this movie, you fill me with inertia) and move on to Brian De Palma's rock and roll iteration of Faust, The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1974's Phantom of the Paradise.
