The biggest difference between our upbringings was that my Dad was Career Army and my parents were Christian conservatives, so I didn't see anybody in my family so much as drink a glass of wine or a beer until I was nearly an adult.<br /><br />Just a brief correction based on your Introduction: J. Edgar Hoover had almost nothing to do with bootleggers during Prohibition, even after the FBI (then the "Division of Investigations") was folded into the Bureau of Prohibitions in 1933. While the FBI officially claims their job was to bring down gangsters, the fact was they steered well clear of bootleggers, Hoover believing all that money would corrupt his men.
